Oyo: We’ve trained over 40,000 technology talents in 18 months — Bosun Tijani

In an era where technological advancement dictates economic progress, Nigeria is making remarkable strides to position itself as a global player. The West African nation, known traditionally for its reliance on natural resources, is undergoing a digital transformation that promises to reshape its economic landscape. At the heart of this revolution is the "three million technology talents" (3MTT) project, an ambitious initiative spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu's administration. This program aims to equip Nigeria's youthful population with the digital skills needed to drive innovation and economic growth. The Oyo State, in particular, has emerged as a beacon of this initiative, having trained over 40,000 young people in just 18 months.

The 3MTT Initiative: A Strategy for Economic Prosperity

Nigeria's 3MTT project represents more than just a training program; it is a strategic economic move designed to harness the potential of the nation's demography. With over 70% of Nigerians under the age of 30 and an average age of just 16.9 years, the country boasts one of the world's youngest populations. Recognizing this demographic advantage, President Tinubu has prioritized investing in young people as a means to achieve his vision of a trillion-dollar economy.

Dr Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, emphasizes that community hubs like the recently inaugurated Onikepo Akande IT resource centre in Oyo State serve as launchpads for acquiring globally relevant digital skills. These centres not only provide training but also foster entrepreneurship, enabling young Nigerians to create solutions for their communities while competing on the global stage.

Oyo State: Leading the Tech Talent Revolution

Oyo State has taken a leading role in implementing the 3MTT initiative. In just 18 months, the state has successfully trained over 40,000 youths, demonstrating a commitment to technological advancement and economic diversification. The establishment of the Onikepo Akande IT community resource centre, commissioned by the First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, marks a significant milestone in this journey.

The resource centre, developed in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Renewed Hope Initiative, aims to provide accessible digital education and tools to the local population. This initiative extends beyond Oyo State, with plans to establish similar centres across six geopolitical zones. So far, Bauchi and Kwara States have received donations, with Benue State's centre soon to be commissioned.

The Role of Community Resource Centres

Community resource centres are pivotal to Nigeria's tech talent development strategy. These centres provide much-needed infrastructure and resources that might otherwise be inaccessible to many young Nigerians. By equipping these facilities with modern technology and providing training programs, the government is creating opportunities for education and entrepreneurship.

The Onikepo Akande IT community resource centre, handed over to Oladipo Alayande School of Science in Oke-Bola, is designed to be more than just a training ground. It represents a commitment to digital inclusivity, ensuring that citizens from all social backgrounds have access to the tools and skills required for the 21st-century economy.

Women and Girls in the Digital Economy

The initiative also places a strong emphasis on empowering women and girls through ICT education. The First Lady highlights that ICT knowledge is a powerful tool for breaking traditional barriers and accessing new opportunities. By equipping themselves with digital skills, women can enhance their education, participate in the global economy, and better support their families.

A Vision for the Future

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State shares a vision where Nigeria moves away from dependence on natural resources like oil and solid minerals. He argues that true economic prosperity requires entrepreneurship, education, and opportunities aligned with global technological trends. With artificial intelligence and information technology representing the roads to the future, initiatives like the 3MTT project are essential for creating lasting prosperity.
