FIFA Rules Monday on Nigeria's 2026 World Cup Petition Against DR Congo

FIFA Rules Monday on Nigeria's 2026 World Cup Petition Against DR Congo

The hopes of millions of Nigerian football fans now hinge on a critical decision expected from Zurich this Monday, as FIFA prepares to rule on Nigeria’s eligibility protest against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially lodged the complaint on December 15, 2025, challenging the legitimacy of DR Congo's victory in the African playoff final held in November. The Super Eagles had suffered a heartbreaking defeat in that encounter, losing 4–3 on penalties after a grueling match, a result that seemingly ended their World Cup dreams.

At the core of the NFF’s petition is the allegation that DR Congo fielded six ineligible players during the crucial playoff match. According to the Nigerian federation, these players had recently switched international allegiance but had not fully completed the necessary FIFA protocols to represent DR Congo in such a decisive fixture. The NFF contends that this breach of regulations should result in the disqualification of DR Congo and the reinstatement of Nigeria in the qualification process.

Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the General Secretary of the NFF, has expressed strong confidence in the merit of Nigeria's case. Speaking ahead of the ruling, he stated, "We have a good case. We do not venture into what would be an exercise in futility. As far as we are concerned, we have a strong case, and we are awaiting FIFA's decision on the complaints we have lodged." This sentiment of cautious optimism is shared within the Super Eagles squad, with midfielder Alex Iwobi telling reporters, "We are still waiting; hopefully, we can go to the World Cup."

The stakes could not be higher. Should FIFA rule in Nigeria's favor, the Super Eagles would be reinstated and advance to the Intercontinental Play-Off tournament scheduled for March in Mexico. A successful outing in that six-team tournament would secure one of the final slots for the 2026 World Cup. Conversely, if the petition is dismissed, Nigeria’s absence from the global showpiece will be confirmed, marking a significant blow to the nation’s footballing prestige. The entire Nigerian football community now awaits Monday’s verdict with bated breath.
