UI names Professor Olapegba as 14th Vice-Chancellor

The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba as its 14th Vice-Chancellor following a rigorous and competitive selection process.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Chief Adebisi Akande, after the council approved the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.

According to Akande, the selection process commenced in accordance with the provisions of the University Act ahead of the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor on November 1, 2026.

He explained that advertisements for the position were published in three national newspapers in April 2026, attracting six applicants. To ensure a wider and more competitive process, the Governing Council constituted a Search Team to identify other qualified candidates who had not initially applied.

The move led to two additional applications, increasing the number of candidates to eight.

Akande stated that all candidates were evaluated by the council on July 21 using approved assessment guidelines, after which five top candidates were shortlisted for the final stage of the exercise.

The shortlisted candidates were subsequently interviewed by the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which recommended Professor Olapegba as the most suitable candidate for the position. The recommendation was unanimously endorsed by the Governing Council.

Describing the process as transparent, thorough, and highly competitive, Akande expressed confidence in Olapegba’s ability to provide effective leadership and contribute to the continued growth of the institution.

Professor Olapegba, a Professor of Psychology and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the university, will officially assume office on November 1, 2026, following the completion of the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor.
