A Nigerian lawyer based in the United Kingdom, Baron Chymaker, has formally started the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.
Chymaker disclosed this in a post on X on Thursday, stating that his Nigerian lawyer had submitted his application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) after payment of the required fees.
He wrote, “I have today received a confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval.”
The legal practitioner, who is known for his commentary on international law, Nigerian and UK legal practice, as well as cryptocurrency issues, has often criticised aspects of Nigeria’s judicial system.
He had previously faulted the country’s reliance on the doctrine of judicial precedent, arguing that the principle of stare decisis has contributed to unfair outcomes in some election tribunal cases.
Chymaker has also encouraged Nigerian-trained lawyers to seek advanced qualifications and explore opportunities to practise in more developed jurisdictions.
However, as of the time of filing this report, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had not issued any official statement regarding his application
