Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that the state’s vision for prosperity, employment growth, and expanded trade is progressing well through the launch of its AfCFTA sub-national implementation strategy. The Governor says this strategy will accelerate sustainable development across the state.
Speaking at a post-engagement meeting held at the Local Government Service Commission Training School in Agodi, Ibadan, Governor Makinde explained that, owing to Oyo State’s large population and extensive infrastructure investments, the state is well-positioned to benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He emphasized that the implementation will generate massive employment and opportunities for entrepreneurs and business owners, and notably increase trade volumes.
Among the state’s initiatives, Makinde cited that Oyo has saved about USD 6 million in a Sovereign Wealth Fund launched several months ago, aimed at preserving resources for future development. He said that infrastructure investments — such as upgrading the Ibadan Airport to international standard, and building roads including those between Moniya and Iseyin — are part of efforts to ensure both present standards of living improve and that fundamental systems endure for tomorrow.
The Governor underlined the importance of combining knowledge, productivity, and natural resources as essential pillars for lifting people out of poverty. He said the state would leverage its infrastructure, human capital (especially youth), and geographic advantage to not just produce but also trade both regionally and internationally. A center of value will be created such that graduates and skilled youths will find employment, and foreign exchange earnings will rise.
Special Adviser on AfCFTA and International Trade, Ms. Neo Theodore Tlhaselo, was present and expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde for positioning Oyo as the first sub-national entity in the country and across Africa to roll out an AfrCFTA implementation strategy. She described the strategy as a legal instrument that will allow Oyo State to engage globally, build bilateral trade relationships, and participate effectively in the agreement’s framework.
Also in attendance were the Chief of Staff, Head of Service, Deputy Chief of Staff, SPP Agency Director-General, and several dignitaries who affirmed the state’s readiness and commitment to reap the gains from this strategy. Governor Makinde urged that the state not be remembered merely for its visible infrastructure, but for the institutions being built to ensure sustainable development well after his administration.
