A tense boundary dispute between communities in Osun and Oyo states escalated into violence this week, resulting in the death of Amotekun operative Lamidi Abiodun and the disappearance of another officer. The attack occurred on Wednesday at the Papa Farm area near Iwo, Osun State, where armed assailants ambushed a security team responding to farmers’ reports of ongoing invasions on their farmland.
The Amotekun Corps confirmed that the victims were part of a joint task force with Nigeria’s Vigilante Group (VGN). Upon arrival at the scene, the team was allegedly attacked by armed men led by Akeem Olofa, a criminal linked to regional violence. While Abiodun initially survived gunfire, he died from machete injuries to the head. One VGN member, Nurudeen Alowonle, remains missing, and another operative, Alex Sola, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.
The incident has been reported to police in Iwo, and investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators. Amotekun spokesperson Yusuf Idowu Abass expressed condolences to Abiodun’s family, honoring his “bravery and sacrifice.” Authorities urge calm amid heightened tensions between border communities.
