ASUU Warns of Looming Strike, Urges N’Assembly, Stakeholders to Intervene

Speaking in Oye Ekiti, the Zonal Coordinator of ASUU (Akure Zone), Prof. Adeola Egbedokun, accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of neglecting agreements and appeals made by the union over the past two years.

Key issues raised by ASUU include:

Implementation of the 2009 ASUU–FG agreement

Sustainable funding and revitalisation of universities

Payment of outstanding 25–35% salary arrears

Promotion stagnation for over four years

Unremitted third-party deductions

Victimisation of members in some institutions

Egbedokun said lecturers’ patience had “reached its breaking point,” stressing that ASUU members had refrained from strikes for over two years in the hope of dialogue, but had received “betrayal of trust” instead.

He criticised the Federal Government’s education loan policy, calling it a “sinister snare” meant to trap lecturers in debt and weaken cooperative societies.

While acknowledging a scheduled government meeting on August 28, 2025, he warned that if genuine action was not taken, the union would have no choice but to mobilise for strike action.
