Beans Farmers Refute Claims of Using Cement for Preservation

Speaking in Lagos on Sunday, the association’s National President, Mr. Kabir Shuaibu, described the allegation as false and misleading, stressing that no genuine member of the body engages in such practices.

The clarification follows a viral video showing young men mixing beans with what appeared to be cement. Shuaibu, however, maintained that the association upholds international best practices in the storage and preservation of beans.

“Our members do not use cement or any harmful substances. In fact, we have completely stopped the use of additives for preservation. Presently, we use thick nylon liners inside sacks to keep the produce airtight and prevent insect infestation,” he explained.

According to him, the method has proven highly effective, as the airtight packaging makes it difficult for weevils to penetrate. He added that where necessary, farmers rely on safe alternatives like dried peppers or a regulated additive known as Topstoxin, which poses no health risk.

Shuaibu further stressed that such allegations could damage the credibility of hardworking farmers. “It is simply unthinkable that anyone would use cement. Consumers would easily notice, and it would destroy trust in our produce. We will never endanger the public in that way,” he assured.
