The Senate has formally suspended Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan following the findings of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. The committee determined that she violated the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended) by bringing the Presiding Officer and the Senate as a whole into public disrepute.
As part of her suspension, the Senate has implemented several measures. Her office will be locked for the duration of the suspension, and she is required to return all Senate property in her possession to the Clerk of the National Assembly. Additionally, both Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and her staff are prohibited from accessing or being present within the National Assembly premises throughout the suspension period.
During this time, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan will not receive her salaries or allowances, and her assigned security personnel will be withdrawn. Furthermore, she is prohibited from publicly identifying herself as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, both domestically and internationally, for the duration of the suspension.
The Senate has indicated that it may review the suspension or consider an early reinstatement if Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a formal written apology for consideration.
