Celebrating Distinguished Scholar Prof. Sifau Adejumo, First Female Professor from Ipapo Land

Prof. Sifau Adejumo has reached a remarkable milestone by being appointed to the professorial cadre at the University of Ibadan. Hailing from Ipapo land in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, her elevation stands not only as a personal achievement but also as a source of inspiration for her community and beyond. Her career has unfolded across research, teaching, mentorship and community engagement in a field vital for sustainable agriculture.

From her academic beginnings, Prof. Adejumo earned her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Ibadan in 1997, followed by a Master of Science in Environmental Biology in 2004 and a PhD in Environmental Biology specialising in Environmental Crop Physiology/Crop Nutrition in 2010. She has since pursued postdoctoral fellowships at leading global institutions including the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in India in 2014, the National Centre for Biotechnology in Madrid in 2022, and the Institute of Biological Research (CONICET) in Argentina in 2025.

Her research portfolio is rich and deeply significant: it addresses how crops respond to abiotic stress such as drought or nutrient limitation, heavy-metal contamination in soils, remediation and hyper-accumulation, and sustainable crop nutrition. This work bridges laboratory science and practical agricultural solutions, key for advancing food security and environmental health in Nigeria and beyond.

Prof. Adejumo began her professional journey outside purely academic settings—working in governmental and public service roles at local, state and federal levels in Nigeria—before transitioning fully to academia. At the University of Ibadan she rose through academic ranks from Lecturer II, to Senior Lecturer, to Associate Professor, and now to full Professor in the Department of Crop Protection & Environmental Biology, Faculty of Agriculture.

Beyond her personal scholarship, she has supervised numerous undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students, shaping the next generation of agricultural scientists. Her global collaborations across India, Spain, Argentina and beyond have enriched her work and that of her peers. She also holds the chieftaincy title of “Fimogboye of Ipapo Land,” underlining her standing in her home community.

Her elevation to professor is celebrated not only as a scholarly success but as a role model moment for women in science, particularly in agricultural and environmental disciplines often dominated by men. In an era marked by climate change, environmental degradation and critical needs for sustainable farming, her leadership is timely and essential.
