COAS Tasks Junior, Middle Cadre Army Personnel on Operational Effectiveness

Lt-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has urged junior and middle cadre officers of the Nigerian Army to raise their standards in leadership, efficiency, and combat readiness. He delivered this message while opening a seminar on Transformational Leadership, organised by the Army’s Department of Transformation and Innovation in Ibadan.

Represented at the event by Maj-Gen. O.S. Abai, Chief of Transformation and Innovation, the COAS emphasised that junior and mid-level commanders form the tactical backbone of security operations and directly influence mission outcomes. He noted that with evolving security threats, these ranks must be capable of quick decision-making and translating intelligence into effective action.

Oluyede warned that the demands of modern warfare and internal security require a holistic approach to operations, where leadership, discipline, and adaptability matter as much as firepower. He encouraged participants to continuously learn — both in seminars and in the field — and to build character, mental agility, and professional competence.

The seminar also addressed issues such as combat stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), drug abuse, and other challenges that hurt combat readiness. The organisers said the training aims to institutionalise mentorship, foster discipline, and enhance resilience among army personnel.

Maj-Gen. Abai added that the seminar’s goal is to reposition the Army by reinforcing professional standards, ensuring discipline, and cultivating next-generation leaders suited to the evolving security landscape. He underlined that leadership remains a critical component of operational success.
