Cooking Gas Price Drops — Dangote Refinery Announces Cheapest Rate Nationwide

In a major relief for Nigerian households, Dangote Refinery has slashed its cooking gas (LPG) price to ₦740 per kilogram, marking the lowest rate seen nationwide in 2025. This dramatic cut follows weeks of shortages and price spikes that pushed the commodity as high as ₦3,600 per kg in some areas.

Dealers report that Dangote’s decision has already prompted reductions across depots and retail outlets. While other depots are selling at ₦910 and ₦920 per kg, Dangote’s new price sets a benchmark that could force further drops in retail pricing.

Sources attribute the rollback to the recent strike by PENGASSAN, which disrupted supply and loading operations at Dangote, causing scarcity and pushing up costs. With the strike ended or easing, the refinery appears to be resuming normal operations and easing pressure in the LPG market.

Observers, however, warn that the new rates may not immediately translate to lower consumer prices. Some retailers may hoard stocks or maintain high margins, delaying price relief for end users. Many are calling for regulatory oversight to enforce compliance and prevent profiteering.

The timing of the cut offers respite ahead of the forthcoming dry season, when cooking fuel demand typically rises. For many households already struggling under inflation, this move could ease one significant cost burden.

Energy analysts suggest that sustained pricing discipline, transparent supply chains, and responsive regulation are needed to prevent future volatility. Meanwhile, federal agencies have challenged marketers indulging in unjustified LPG markups and signaled that sanctions may follow.
