Solomon Dalung, former Minister of Youth and Sports, has joined calls demanding the immediate release of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari. As National President of the Movement for the Emancipation of Nigeria (MEN), Dalung describes Kyari’s continued incarceration as a grave injustice, especially in light of recent presidential pardons granted to convicted offenders.
Dalung pointed out that, while individuals convicted for drug trafficking, kidnapping, fraud, and other serious crimes have been granted clemency, Abba Kyari remains in detention. He argued this selective leniency undermines the credibility of the justice system and smacks of double standards.
“You cannot pardon someone convicted of serious crimes, yet keep in custody a police officer who has been in service,” Dalung said, insisting that mercy should not be reserved for particular cases while others are unjustly held. He urged President Tinubu and the Attorney-General to discontinue Kyari’s prosecution and release him, labeling the current treatment as institutional betrayal against someone who devoted years to national security.
MEN’s statement calls for equal application of justice, asserting that complacency in Kyari’s case could erode public confidence in prosecutorial fairness and governance.
