Don’t Abandon the House We All Built – Elder Oyelese Appeals for Patience Amid PDP Defections

Elder Wole Oyelese, one of the founding fathers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, has called on party loyalists to remain steadfast and resist the temptation to abandon the party amid a wave of defection by notable leaders.

In a public statement, Oyelese acknowledged that the PDP is currently enduring a difficult phase, one he described as “not new in politics.” He emphasized that such seasons of challenge are surmountable, urging members to exhibit patience, pursue internal reforms, and recommit to common ideals.

Oyelese lamented that many grievances within the party stem from the perceived lack of inclusiveness during past congresses, where some leaders felt marginalized or unrecognized. He asserted that these issues are fixable if approached with unity and openness.

He used a metaphor to appeal to members: “It’s not good to abandon the house because of a leaking roof; when challenges arise — we rebuild, remodel, and reinforce. We have laboured to build this house together; we must not allow internal cracks to destroy it.”

Addressing Governor Seyi Makinde, Oyelese called on him to intervene decisively: “Where there are grievances, the Governor should quickly move in and address the issues, to make every member of the party feel relevant and wanted.” He expressed the view that a leader’s ability to heal divisions is a measure of his leadership strength.

Oyelese urged all members to remain within the fold, reassuring them that the party’s internal capacity can correct its course and restore unity. He warned that continued disaffection among party stakeholders could weaken its base if left unaddressed.

He also affirmed his belief in the resilience of the PDP: that it remains the only platform with structure, experience, and grassroots appeal to command the confidence of Oyo’s people. “This moment too shall pass,” Oyelese declared, urging party members to rebuild together.
