A court has ordered a temporary suspension of the enforcement of tinted glass permit requirements for motorists, directing police to hold off until the ongoing legal case is resolved.
The Federal High Court in Warri issued an interim order in response to a petition challenging the constitutionality and implementation process of the tinted glass permit policy.
Lead counsel in the case, Kunle Edun, emphasized that the court’s directive was meant to preserve citizens’ rights and ensure that no enforcement occurs while the dispute is being heard.
Police confirmed they have received the court order and will maintain the status quo, refraining from impounding vehicles or fining drivers for tinted windows during this period.
Police spokesperson in the Federal Capital Territory stated that enforcement actions requiring motorists to present tinted glass permits are suspended until the court issues a final judgment.
The tinted permit regulation had been scheduled for full enforcement recently, following extended deadline periods and efforts to ensure public compliance. The law behind it is intended to improve security, because tinted windows can sometimes conceal wrongdoing.
Critics and some members of the public raised concerns that the permit requirement could lead to arbitrary arrests, extortion, or unfair targeting of motorists. The court’s action is seen as a check on those worries.
Motorists are being advised to watch for further announcements. Until the court’s final decision, tinted glass regulations will remain unenforced, and any orders or fines connected to non-compliance may not be valid.
