The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stern rebuke to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent declaration of "war" against political opponents he described as "anti-Tinubu candidates" ahead of the February 21, 2026, elections. In a statement released in Abuja, the party described the Minister’s utterances as irresponsible and dangerous, emphasizing that Nigeria is a constitutional democracy, not a battlefield for personal vendettas.
The ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, stressed that the outcome of the forthcoming polls will be determined solely by the Nigerian electorate, not by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or any government appointee. "The sovereign will rests with the Nigerian people, not with any President, not with any Minister, and certainly not with those who mistake access to state power for ownership of the nation," the statement read. The party accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its agents of attempting to intimidate voters through threats and coercion.
Furthermore, the opposition party warned that any attempt to undermine the free choice of the people would be met with firm resistance through all available lawful and constitutional means. The ADC argued that the resort to threats of "war" only exposes the ruling party's fear of losing power in a free and fair contest. They urged residents of the FCT not to be cowed but to come out en masse to vote for candidates who represent their interests rather than those seeking to entrench a political dynasty.
The party also called on security agencies and electoral stakeholders to ensure a level playing field, noting that the FCT, as the nation's capital, should be a model of democratic civility rather than a theater of political intimidation. The ADC reiterated its commitment to protecting the sanctity of the ballot box and ensuring that the voice of the ordinary Nigerian prevails over the might of "federal might."
