The Federal Government has announced the immediate withdrawal of police officers previously assigned to VIP protection duties, redeploying them to insecurity-prone communities across the North-Central region and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Friday, stating that the move is part of "Operation Savannah Shield," a strategic initiative ordered by President Bola Tinubu to combat rising terrorism and banditry. The redeployed officers have been sent to vulnerable communities in Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger States to undertake core community policing functions.
This directive follows a recent deadly attack in Kwara State that claimed approximately 75 lives, an incident President Tinubu condemned as "beastly." According to the Minister, the redeployment aims to increase visible policing, particularly around places of worship and remote areas that have recently become targets for attacks.
"These personnel have been returned to core community policing functions to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives," Idris stated. He further noted that the government is welcoming selective international intelligence support from partners like the United States while maintaining a Nigerian-led counter-terrorism operation.
