Fire Engulfs Oyo Gas Station: Multi-Million Naira Damage in Tanker Fire

A major fire broke out at the Gastab petroleum station along Ibadan/Oyo Road in Oyo State on Saturday evening, resulting in significant property damage. According to reports, the blaze started when sparks ignited during the unloading of petroleum from a Scania DAF tanker (registration XV 97 AGL) into an underground tank. The tanker, carrying 45,000 liters of gasoline, was completely destroyed by the fire.

The Oyo State Fire Service, led by General Manager Mr. Yemi Akinyinka, confirmed that while no lives were lost, the fire caused millions of naira in damages. Firefighters, in collaboration with the Federal Fire Service, worked for hours to contain and extinguish the blaze. Their prompt response prevented further destruction, saving the petrol station and protecting properties valued in the billions of naira.

Authorities including the Senior Adviser on Fire Reform/Chairman Hon Maroof Akinwande and the Nigeria Police Force Ojongbodu Division, led by CSP Adeyeye, were present at the scene. The incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety measures during fuel handling operations.
