Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has formally sworn in Professor Musibau Adetunji Babatunde as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG), marking a significant shift in the state’s administrative machinery. The ceremony, held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, followed the sudden removal of the former SSG, Professor Olanike Kudirat Adeyemo, in what the government has described as a strategic cabinet reshuffle. Governor Makinde, while presiding over the event, clarified that the changes were not punitive but were necessitated by the urgent need to "reposition the administration for greater efficiency" and ensure the optimal delivery of his sustainable development agenda.
The Governor’s decision to bring in Professor Babatunde, a seasoned economist and the immediate past Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, signals a pivot towards a more technocratic and economically driven governance style. In his charge to the new SSG, Governor Makinde emphasized that the current phase of his administration requires a seamless coordination of government policies that can translate into tangible economic benefits for the people of Oyo State. He noted that Babatunde’s extensive background in economic planning and his previous role as the Chief Economic Adviser make him uniquely qualified to drive the "Omituntun 2.0" agenda, which prioritizes fiscal sustainability and infrastructural expansion.
The reshuffle also affected other key portfolios, reflecting the Governor's intent to reinvigorate his team. Barrister Temilolu Seun Ashamu was redeployed from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to fill the vacancy left by Babatunde at the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. Additionally, the Governor announced the elevation of Mr. Ademola Aderinto, formerly the Senior Special Assistant on Public Works, to the position of commissioner-designate, while Honourable Abiodun Adedoja was appointed as Special Adviser on Energy Security. These movements, according to the Governor, are designed to place "round pegs in round holes" and ensure that every sector of the state’s economy is manned by capable hands.
Addressing the exit of the former SSG, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, the administration maintained a tone of gratitude and professionalism. The official statement released by the Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, acknowledged her service to the state but reiterated that public service is a continuum where changes are inevitable to meet evolving challenges. By avoiding public criticism of the ousted official, the Governor framed the transition as a natural evolution of his administration’s lifecycle, aimed at injecting fresh energy and perspectives into the state executive council.
In his acceptance speech, the new SSG, Professor Babatunde, described his appointment as a "call to service" and pledged to work assiduously to justify the confidence reposed in him. He promised to leverage his experience to foster a more cohesive relationship between the various ministries, departments, and agencies, ensuring that bureaucratic bottlenecks do not hinder the implementation of the Governor’s projects. He also highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making, assuring the Governor that his tenure would be defined by transparency, accountability, and a relentless focus on results.
Political observers in the state have interpreted the reshuffle as a strategic consolidation of power and a preparation for the next phase of governance. With the administration entering the midterm of its second tenure, there is immense pressure to deliver on campaign promises, particularly in the areas of economic growth and infrastructure. The appointment of a budget expert as the administrative head of the government suggests that financial prudence and project execution will be the watchwords for the remainder of the Makinde administration.
As the new appointees settle into their roles, the expectations from the public remain high. The people of Oyo State will be watching closely to see if this administrative realignment translates into the "greater efficiency" promised by the Governor. For now, the swearing-in ceremony stands as a reaffirmation of Governor Makinde’s resolve to constantly evaluate and upgrade his team in the pursuit of a better Oyo State.
