Speaking during an inspection of the two projects on Monday, Lawal disclosed that the airport upgrade has reached about 76 per cent completion and should be ready for aircraft takeoff and landing within the next two to three weeks.
He explained that the main runway had already been completed, while finishing touches such as runway markings, the installation of an instrument landing system, and lighting would be fixed shortly to make the facility operational for day and night flights.
On the Circular Road, the Acting Governor said the 32.5km East Wing was progressing according to plan and should be delivered within the next two to three months. He described the two projects as “legacy projects” that align with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision for infrastructure-led economic expansion.
“We are satisfied with the level of work, the pace, and the quality so far,” Lawal said. “Our administration remains committed to adequate funding to ensure timely delivery. Contractors must stay on their toes; there will be no room for relaxation.”
Responding to questions about whether the upgraded airport would be ready to receive guests during the coronation of the Olubadan later this month, the Acting Governor said contractors would determine its readiness, noting that regular tests have already confirmed the runway meets international standards.
The ₦41 billion airport project was renamed in 2024 after the late Premier of the Western Region, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, with a 12-month completion timeline.
