Ibadan at a Crossroads: Holding On to Our Roots While Growing Forward

Ibadan at a Crossroads: Holding On to Our Roots While Growing Forward

Walk through the streets of Ibadan and you’ll see two worlds existing side by side. On one side, there are new estates, big malls, and businesses popping up. On the other, our traditional markets like Oje, Bodija, and Oja’ba are still where thousands go every day to buy food and trade. Development is good—but how do we balance it so that progress doesn’t swallow up culture?

Education is another area we can’t ignore. We have big names like the University of Ibadan and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, yet many rural schools in Oyo State are still struggling with basic facilities. If Oyo must truly move forward, we have to make sure that quality education reaches not just the city, but also the villages.

Despite the challenges, one thing remains clear: the people of Oyo are resilient. From the farmers in Oke-Ogun to the tech boys and girls in Bodija, we are not short of ideas and energy. What we need is a system that supports us policies that work, leaders that listen, and communities that keep coming together.

At the end of the day, the future of Oyo lies in our ability to inform ourselves, educate our youth, and connect as one people. That is how we can grow forward while still holding on to our roots.
