A 52-year-old resident of Ibadan, identified as Omoruyi Celestine, appeared before the Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday, accused of defrauding a Nigerian citizen of N1.9 million under the guise of securing a Canadian visa for his son.
The defendant, who resides in the Seventh Day area of Oke-Bola, Ibadan, faces two charges—fraud and embezzlement—after allegedly obtaining the funds between November 2022 and April 2024. Prosecuting officer Constable Akeem Akinloye alleged that Celestine deceived Ambrose Manyawo by promising to facilitate a Canadian visa for his son, Fabata Ambrose. However, the visa was never secured, and the money was allegedly diverted for personal use.
The prosecution stated that the crimes violate Sections 390(9) (embezzlement) and 419 (fraudulent practices) of the Oyo State Criminal Code Laws, 2000. Celestine pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi granted bail in the sum of N1.5 million, requiring two sureties of equal worth. The case was adjourned until August 12 for further proceedings.
This incident underscores the rising prevalence of visa-related fraud schemes targeting Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad. Authorities urge vigilance against such scams, which often exploit vulnerable individuals pursuing overseas migration or education.
