Kwara Governor Mourns Slain Forest Guard, Donates N10m to Family

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a forest guard, Mr. Omotosho Samuel, who lost his life during a confrontation with suspected kidnappers in the Koro community, Ekiti Local Government Area of the state. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the Governor described the incident as devastating and paid tribute to the fallen guard for his bravery and ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, when a combined team of forest guards, local hunters, and vigilantes acted on intelligence regarding the presence of armed bandits in the bush around Koro, a border community near Kogi State. The volunteers were ambushed during the operation, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire in which Mr. Samuel was fatally shot.

To support the bereaved family, Governor AbdulRazaq announced a donation of N10 million. The Governor stated that the fund was a token of the state government's gratitude for Samuel's sacrifice in the ongoing fight against banditry and kidnapping. "He is our hero, and we ask God to give succour to his family," the Governor said, while also extending his condolences to the colleagues of the deceased.

The Governor further commended the bravery of the security agents and local volunteers involved in the operation. He assured them of the administration's continued support in their efforts to rid Kwara State of criminal elements and ensure the safety of all residents. The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with security agencies to tackle the rising security challenges in the region.

Meanwhile, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, clarified the nature of the incident, describing it as a "bush encounter" rather than a direct attack on the Koro township. He explained that the security team had moved to confront suspected gunmen spotted in the forest with cattle. The Commissioner noted that Samuel's AK-47 rifle and ammunition were recovered intact, and investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full details of the encounter.

This tragic event comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Kwara State, following reports of threats by suspected terrorists in other communities. Residents of Lalagi village in Kaiama LGA were recently thrown into panic after bandits reportedly demanded a levy, while security memos have alerted authorities to potential threats in Baruten LGA. The state government continues to urge vigilance and cooperation from all citizens.
