Lagos Assembly Speaker Crisis: Nigerians Await Next Move as Obasa Returns and Meranda Resigns.

Lagos Assembly Speaker Crisis: Nigerians Await Next Move as Obasa Returns and Meranda Resigns.

After weeks of intense negotiations and strategic moves among key stakeholders in Lagos State, Honourable Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as the speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

His return followed the resignation of Honourable Mojisola Meranda, who reverted to her role as deputy speaker. This development marked a significant turning point in the leadership crisis that had engulfed the assembly, effectively restoring the previous order.

The resolution of the conflict was the result of a compromise among the major players involved and is being closely monitored by the public. Initial reports indicate that Obasa may need to step down again to allow for the emergence of a compromise candidate for the new speaker.

Sources told Nigerian Tribune have indicated that a new speaker is expected to be selected within the next 48 hours, following the mutual agreement that facilitated the recent leadership changes.

The leadership struggle dates back to January 13, when 36 out of the 40 assembly members voted to remove Obasa as speaker. The ongoing search for a resolution has involved prominent figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), which includes influential leaders and elders in the party.

This power struggle has led to tensions among some party leaders, prompting the establishment of a peace committee that includes notable figures such as former national APC chairman Chief Bisi Akande and former Ogun State Governor Chief Segun Osoba.
