Makinde: From National Icon to Continental Beacon — Sulaimon Olanrewaju

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has transcended local leadership, moving from national prominence to becoming a continental beacon of sub-national progress. His administration’s decisive alignment with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and measurable reform programs signal this shift.

While most sub-national governments across Africa still talk about the AfCFTA, Oyo State led the way — launching its implementation strategy ahead of peers and attracting global recognition. Makinde has emphasised export-orientation over import-substitution, urging the state to produce locally and sell internationally, thereby integrating into Africa’s $3.4 trillion market.

Projects like the Fasola Industrial Hub — designated Africa’s first Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ) by the African Development Bank (AfDB) — and the state’s pioneering listing with the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) underscore the governor’s ambition and the state’s growing continental footprint.

Makinde’s leadership extends beyond economics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his data-driven, human-centred approach—a deviation from the national lockdown strategy—won praise when it proved effective and balanced. Sustainable agribusiness, infrastructure, health-insurance for public school pupils and governance-reform agencies have all featured in his agenda.

By moving the narrative and practice of sub-national governance from consumption to production, from inward focus to continental engagement, Makinde has re-positioned Oyo State as a model. His story is no longer just about state-level impact, but about Africa-wide relevance and leadership.
