Makinde receives surveillance aircraft to boost fight against crime in Oyo

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has taken delivery of two security surveillance aircraft as part of measures by his administration to strengthen security operations and improve the fight against criminal activities across the state.

The aircraft arrived at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport, Ibadan, on Tuesday, marking what the governor described as a major milestone in enhancing Oyo State’s security architecture.

Makinde said the new equipment would provide additional support to security agencies through improved aerial monitoring, intelligence gathering and faster response to security threats.

Speaking with journalists after receiving the aircraft, the governor explained that the acquisition was driven by the need to complement the efforts of security personnel operating across the state.

He noted that the vast landmass of Oyo State and the challenges involved in effectively monitoring all areas necessitated the adoption of modern security technology.

According to him, the surveillance aircraft would enable security agencies to cover more locations within a shorter period and respond more efficiently to emerging threats.

The governor stated that the acquisition of the aircraft was part of a long-term security strategy of his administration and was not a response to the recent kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.

He explained that plans to strengthen the state’s security system had been ongoing before the incident, adding that the aircraft were acquired as part of broader efforts to protect residents.

Makinde emphasised that effective security requires a combination of manpower, intelligence and technology, noting that the new equipment would complement existing security measures in the state.

The governor disclosed that the surveillance aircraft would be deployed immediately for security operations across Oyo State.

He added that the aircraft were flown into Ibadan by Nigerian Air Force pilots following a Memorandum of Understanding between the Oyo State Government and the Nigerian Air Force.

Makinde said the partnership would ensure that the aircraft are managed by trained personnel and deployed effectively to enhance security coordination.

Meanwhile, Makinde expressed relief over the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area.

He commended the security agencies involved in the rescue operation, saying the development brought relief to the affected families and residents of the state.

The governor assured the people of Oyo State that his administration would remain committed to prioritising their safety and welfare, stressing that a secure environment is essential for growth, development and prosperity.
