The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde's request to go on annual leave, paving the way for Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal to oversee the affairs of state in his absence.
According to the governor's letter to the House, his leave will run from Monday, August 10, through September 11, with resumption scheduled for September 14, 2026.
Lawmakers granted the request during plenary after reviewing Makinde's formal correspondence, submitted in keeping with the constitutional requirement that a governor notify the legislature before any absence from office.
Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, standing in for Speaker Rt Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, read the governor's letter to members on Thursday. The House approved it without opposition, with lawmakers expressing confidence that governance would continue smoothly under the deputy governor.
Lawal will serve as Acting Governor for the entire duration of Makinde's leave, handling the day-to-day running of government to ensure state administration continues without interruption until the governor returns.
Following the approval, the Deputy Speaker wished Makinde a restful break and reaffirmed the Assembly's commitment to a healthy working relationship with the executive arm. He also pointed to Lawal's track record leading in an acting capacity as reassurance that policy implementation would stay on track.
Other lawmakers commended Makinde for following constitutional procedure, describing his notification to the House as a further sign of respect for democratic norms and the rule of law.
The Assembly has directed that its approval be formally communicated to the executive arm for appropriate action.
