Dr. Babatunde Afees Adeniyi has been named the new Chairman of the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC). Born around five decades ago in Oyo Town (Oyo West LGA), his appointment underscores his long service in education, labour advocacy, and institutional leadership.
He currently lectures at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo, and previously served as Chief Lecturer at Oyo State College of Agriculture & Technology, Igboora. His career includes significant contributions to teaching, research, institutional growth, and the welfare of academic staff.
Dr. Adeniyi holds a Ph.D. in Economics (2023, Kwara State University), two master’s degrees (in Economics and Agricultural Economics), and a Bachelor in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan. His academic background underscores his depth in economics, agriculture, and development—skills which may be crucial in leading an electoral body.
A longtime trade unionist, he has held leadership roles in the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), serving as PRO, state chairman, and zonal treasurer in the South-West. He was also the pioneer chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of tertiary institution unions in Oyo State.
In his new role, Dr. Adeniyi is expected to guide OYSIEC in upholding electoral integrity, strengthening internal democracy, and ensuring transparent, credible elections across local government areas. His academic, leadership, and union credentials will likely be called upon as he assumes the challenges of sitting atop a state electoral commission.
