Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday while inspecting Nigeria’s new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
He described the move as a milestone reform, noting that old machines could only produce between 250 and 300 passports daily, compared to the new system’s capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports every day.
“With this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation. We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week. Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,” Tunji-Ojo said.
He explained that centralisation, in line with global standards, would improve uniformity, efficiency, and enhance the integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.
The minister added that the centralised system was part of President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda to boost NIS capacity and ensure better service delivery.
“This is a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria,” Tunji-Ojo said, stressing that the reform would not only speed up delivery but also bring services closer to Nigerians.
