The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has emphasised that Ibadanland remains a sacred space for religious harmony and that there is absolutely no room for religious crisis within the ancient city. Addressing residents and community leaders, the monarch stated that people of all faiths are residents of Ibadan, and normal civic life cannot tolerate divisions grounded on religion.
Oba Ladoja affirmed that his role transcends any single religious group, describing himself as the king of all faiths in Ibadanland. He urged citizens to respect one another’s beliefs and to settle differences peacefully, reminding the populace of Ibadan’s longstanding tradition of interfaith coexistence.
In his remarks, he highlighted that a community divided by religion cannot prosper: “When the beliefs we hold become weapons rather than reasons for unity, we all lose,” he said. The Olubadan insisted that both religious and traditional institutions must work hand-in-hand to preserve peace and foster inclusive development.
The monarch also called on religious leaders—pastors, imams and traditional clerics—to play their part in public life by promoting respect, tolerance and social cohesion rather than stirring conflict. He pledged his palace’s support for initiatives that bridge communities and deepen understanding between different faith groups.
Oba Ladoja’s declaration comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with increased religious tension in various regions. By reaffirming Ibadan’s culture of peace, he sent a message that the city will not be fertile ground for religious agitation or exploitation.
