Oba Ladoja Clarifies Jurisdiction, Rejects "Olubadan of Yorubaland" Label

In a definitive statement addressing the scope of his traditional authority, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has publicly declared that his reign is constitutionally and culturally bound to the city of Ibadan. Speaking at a high-profile coronation luncheon organized by the Ibadan Foundation at the Kakanfo Inn on Sunday, the monarch dispelled any notions of territorial ambition beyond his domain. He explicitly stated that he is neither the "Olubadan of Yorubaland" nor the "Olubadan of Oyo State," but rather the custodian of the 11 local government councils that constitute the Ibadan metropolis.

The monarch’s clarification serves as a significant administrative and cultural demarcation, grounding his authority in the provisions of the Oyo State Chiefs Law and the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration. By citing these legal frameworks, Oba Ladoja underscored that his primary obligation is to the approximately four million residents within his specific jurisdiction. He argued that the responsibilities inherent in governing such a vast and populous city are substantial enough to occupy his full attention, rendering any desire for broader, undefined titles unnecessary and distracting.

Addressing an audience of prominent Ibadan elders and dignitaries, including Asiwaju Bode Amao and Chief Bayo Oyero, Oba Ladoja outlined a pragmatic agenda focused on internal development rather than external supremacy battles. He noted that his administration has already begun tackling the city’s most pressing challenges, specifically the menace of land grabbing. The monarch revealed the establishment of a specialized anti-land grabbing committee, which is currently finalizing its report, and hinted at an upcoming comprehensive land reform initiative designed to secure property rights for residents.

The Olubadan also touched upon the economic revitalization of the ancient city. He announced the formation of the Olubadan Economic and Investment Committee, a body charged with identifying moribund industries in Ibadan and recommending strategies for their resuscitation. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to generate employment opportunities for the city's teeming youth population and to restore Ibadan’s status as a commercial nerve center. Oba Ladoja emphasized that the city cannot rely solely on its historical glory but must actively work to create a viable economic future.

Furthermore, the monarch highlighted his proactive engagement with the state government regarding infrastructural developments that affect his subjects. He cited the controversy surrounding the Circular Road project, noting that his palace served as the first point of call for aggrieved residents. He confirmed that he had personally briefed Governor Seyi Makinde on the matter, demonstrating a collaborative approach to conflict resolution that bridges the gap between traditional governance and the state executive.

In his address, Oba Ladoja also celebrated the spirit of unity among Yoruba monarchs, referencing the recent conferment of the Okanlomo Oodua title on Engineer Dotun Sanusi by the Ooni of Ife. He expressed satisfaction with the solidarity shown by monarchs from across Oyo State who attended the event, interpreting it as a positive sign of cohesion within the traditional institution. This acknowledgement of the Ooni’s role further reinforced Ladoja’s stance on mutual respect and the recognition of established boundaries.

Security remains a central pillar of Oba Ladoja’s tenure. He assured the gathering that the traditional council has a clear understanding of the security architecture within Ibadanland. "When we notice security breaches anywhere within our area of jurisdiction, we know who to call and who to hold responsible," he asserted. This statement reflects a determination to utilize the traditional intelligence network to complement formal police efforts in maintaining law and order.

Concluding his remarks, the Olubadan challenged the elite of Ibadan not to rest on the "legacies of bravery and nobility" inherited from their forefathers. Instead, he urged them to confront current challenges with the same resilience, warning against resignation to fate. The luncheon, attended by key figures such as the Otun Balogun, Oba Kola Adegbola, effectively set the tone for Oba Ladoja’s reign—one defined by legal precision, economic focus, and a deep commitment to the specific welfare of Ibadanland.
