Academic activities have resumed at Community High School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State following the release of abducted pupils and teachers, but lingering fear continues to unsettle staff and students due to the absence of visible security around the school.
A teacher at the school, who spoke with journalists, disclosed that anxiety remains high despite the return of the victims. According to him, many parents were initially reluctant to send their children back to school after the abduction, resulting in low attendance when classes first resumed.
He explained that attendance improved only after news of the victims’ safe rescue spread, encouraging more parents to allow their children return. This development has enabled the school to continue academic activities, including the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations.
“Somehow, the fear is still there. When we discuss what happened, some of the teachers still panic,” the teacher said.
While expressing gratitude for the safe return of the abducted pupils and staff, he noted that the psychological impact of the incident has not completely faded within the school community.
He appealed to the government to deploy security personnel to rural schools, stressing that the lack of security presence has left many teachers feeling unsafe.
According to him, visible security around schools would help restore confidence among teachers, pupils, and parents.
The victims were abducted from schools in Oriire LGA and regained their freedom after spending about 57 days in captivity, following a coordinated rescue operation by security agencies.
Two teachers, Michael Oyedokun and Esiyan Adegboye, were killed during the attack.
