In a joint statement signed by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin, and the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Media, Public Affairs and ICT, Hon. Waheed Akintayo (Ilumoka), the Assembly described Shittu’s claims as “misleading and a clear sign of his disconnection from legislative responsibilities.”
The Assembly clarified that the emergency plenary held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, was properly communicated through the official Assembly platform, with a message from the Majority Leader acknowledged by some members.
“It is both unfortunate and shameful that a sitting lawmaker would resort to falsehood for cheap political relevance. Emergency plenaries are not illegal; they are constitutional and widely practiced across serious legislative bodies, including the National Assembly,” the statement read.
Addressing the loan approval, the Assembly explained that the ₦300 billion package was misrepresented by Hon. Shittu. Out of the total, ₦149 billion was strictly to refinance an existing facility with the United Bank for Africa (UBA), while only ₦151 billion represents a fresh request intended to finance infrastructure projects and contractors - a crucial detail the lawmaker “chose to ignore, either out of ignorance or mischief.”
Beyond the loan clarification, the Assembly also raised concern over Hon. Shittu’s performance record, describing him as the least active member of the 10th Assembly. Verified attendance records revealed that Shittu has only participated in 20% of plenary sessions and was absent at major sittings, including the Governor’s budget presentation and the State of the State Address.
He was also the only member who failed to join the recently concluded oversight visits to executive and local government projects, with no significant contributions to previous oversight duties or committee assignments.
“Hon. Shittu has neither sponsored a bill nor moved a motion. His silence on the floor and constant absence from legislative duties show a lawmaker who has failed his constituents and betrayed the mandate entrusted to him. To now attempt to cover his inefficiency with lies is unacceptable,” the statement added.
Reaffirming its commitment to accountability and transparency, the House urged the public to disregard “politically motivated antics of non-performing lawmakers.”
“Instead of spreading unfounded allegations, Hon. Shittu should focus on becoming a functional legislator. His record of absenteeism and non-performance is an embarrassment to both the Assembly and the people of Saki West,” the statement concluded.
