Oyo Assembly Confirms New OYSIEC Chairman, Members

The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially confirmed the appointment of new leadership for the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission. Dr. Babatunde Afeez Adeniyi was ratified as Chairman, while seven other individuals were sworn in as commissioners. The confirmation followed a screening process conducted by the House Committee on Special Duties, which recommended approval after assessing the nominees’ credentials. 

Those confirmed alongside the chairman include Chief Kunmi Agboola, Mr. Olanrewaju Adeoti Emmanuel, Mr. Sunday Olugbemiga Falana, Hon. Remi Ayoade, Mr. Olatunde Akintunde Theophilus, Mrs. Adebayo Mariam Adepeju, and Mr. Babatunde George Ige. 

Following the confirmation, Dr. Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the state’s governor and the Assembly leadership for the trust placed in the new board. He pledged that once inaugurated, the commission will move swiftly to prepare for the next local government elections, committing to uphold the sanctity of the ballot and adhere strictly to electoral laws. 

The Assembly’s approval reflects a broader effort to reset and strengthen electoral institutions at the state level — a step many view as necessary for restoring public confidence in local governance and elections. Civil society groups and political observers have welcomed the move as timely, noting the need for an impartial, well-constituted electoral body ahead of future polls.

By ensuring the commission is properly staffed and mandated, the state government appears to signal readiness to organise credible and transparent local council elections. This could mark a shift from past delays or controversies surrounding local polls in Oyo State.
