Oyo Doctors Set to Begin Strike on October 2 Over Welfare Concerns

Ibadan, Oyo State — The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State chapter, has announced a seven-day warning strike starting October 2, 2025, citing unresolved welfare demands as the reason for the industrial action.

The NMA has outlined key issues prompting the strike, including the implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage, delayed payment of allowances, inadequate staffing, and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital in Ogbomosho.

Dr. Happy Adedapo, Chairman of the Oyo State NMA, emphasized that multiple engagements with state officials have failed to yield satisfactory solutions. “We have exercised patience, but the state of affairs has left us with no alternative. If the government does not act, healthcare services across Oyo State may face serious disruptions,” he warned.

The announcement has raised concerns among residents, who rely heavily on public healthcare facilities. The NMA stressed that the strike is intended as a warning, giving the government time to meet the doctors’ demands and avoid full-scale industrial action.

The state government is yet to respond officially, but the situation highlights the ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector, particularly regarding the welfare of medical professionals and the adequacy of hospital infrastructure.

As the October 2 strike date approaches, both healthcare workers and patients will be closely watching developments, hoping for a resolution that ensures uninterrupted medical services.
