The Oyo State Fire Service has confirmed the recovery of the lifeless body of a 65-year-old man who tragically fell into a deep well in the Oke-Oga Atipe area of Idi-Aga, Ibadan. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, December 4, 2025, prompted a swift emergency response from the state's fire agency following a distress call received from concerned residents. The recovery operation highlights the persistent dangers posed by open wells in residential areas and underscores the critical role of emergency services in urban safety management.
According to a statement released by Hon. Moroof Akinwande, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the agency, the distress call was logged at exactly 9:42 a.m. The caller, identified as Mr. Damola, reported the emergency, triggering the immediate deployment of a rescue team led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele Samsudeen. Upon arrival at the scene, the team assessed the situation and initiated retrieval protocols. Despite the prompt response, the victim, whose identity has been withheld pending family notification, was recovered lifeless from the depths of the well.
The operation concluded with the formal handover of the deceased's body to the Nigeria Police Force. A team led by SP Idowu from the Agugu Police Division was on-site to receive the remains and commence the necessary investigative procedures. This collaboration between the fire service and the police ensures that due process is followed in cases of unnatural death, allowing for a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fall—whether it was accidental or involved other factors.
In his official remarks, Hon. Akinwande described the event as "unfortunate" and used the opportunity to issue a public safety advisory. He urged residents of Oyo State to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly regarding domestic hazards like open wells, which remain common in many parts of Ibadan. The Chairman emphasized the importance of securing such water sources with proper covers and barriers to prevent accidental falls, especially involving vulnerable demographics like the elderly and children.
Furthermore, the Fire Service Chairman touched upon the broader issue of mental health, advising the public to seek help when in distress. This commentary suggests that authorities are aware of the complex social factors that can contribute to such incidents, beyond mere physical safety. He also reiterated the necessity of fire safety compliance, urging homeowners to install fire extinguishers, a timely reminder as the state approaches the dry season when fire risks typically escalate.
This tragedy follows a similar incident reported in November, where a 45-year-old man was retrieved from a well in the Odo-Ogbo area of Iseyin. The recurrence of such cases points to a pattern of domestic safety lapses that requires urgent public sensitization. As the state government continues to invest in fire reform and emergency response capabilities, the onus remains on community members to adhere to safety standards to prevent further loss of life.
