Oyo Government Approves ₦45 Million for HIV/AIDS Control Efforts

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, speaking through his deputy, Bayo Lawal, announced the approval of ₦45 million for the Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OYSACA) during the inauguration ceremony of new OYSACA Ambassadors held at the agency’s conference room in Agodi, Ibadan.

The governor highlighted that the funding, alongside the recent approval for the procurement of HIV test kits, is aimed at boosting the agency’s capacity to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS across the state.

At the event, Governor Makinde inaugurated a distinguished group of ambassadors, including Chief (Dr.) Saka Balogun, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Ladoja, Alhaji Rasaq Adeleke, Hon. Wale Saminu, and Hon. Shina Peller. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving public health and reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence in Oyo State.

“The inauguration of these ambassadors marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer a public health threat,” Makinde said. “As ambassadors, you are champions of change, voices for the silent, beacons of hope for those in darkness, and catalysts for a more inclusive and compassionate society.”

He urged the ambassadors to leverage their influence and networks to raise awareness and support government efforts in fighting the epidemic. The governor emphasized that their role would inspire truth, promote education, and ultimately save lives.

Governor Makinde praised the agency’s leadership, specifically commending Dr. Gbola Adetunji, the newly appointed head of OYSACA, for his extensive experience in healthcare delivery both within Oyo State and nationwide.

“The government recently approved the purchase of HIV/AIDS test kits to assist the ambassadors in their work, alongside releasing ₦45 million to advance the agency’s activities,” he noted.

Makinde encouraged all stakeholders to work tirelessly to ensure the campaign yields tangible results, creating an environment where everyone is empowered to make informed health decisions, and those living with HIV/AIDS receive support and acceptance.

The governor also reiterated that health remains a core pillar of his administration’s sustainable development agenda under the Omituntun 2.0 programme.

In his welcome address, OYSACA Chairman Dr. Gbola Adetunji praised the governor’s proactive leadership, affirming that the newly approved funds would enhance the agency’s ability to reach high-risk populations and provide life-saving services more effectively.

Describing the ambassador inauguration as a new chapter for OYSACA, Dr. Adetunji called for strengthened cooperation between government and prominent individuals to bolster the fight against HIV/AIDS in the state.

The newly appointed ambassadors pledged their unwavering support, promising to use their platforms to educate, inform, and mobilize communities against stigma and the spread of HIV.
