Oyo Government Launches ₦3 Billion Cocoa Rejuvenation Project to Revive State’s Cocoa Legacy

Oyo State has embarked on a transformative agricultural revival with the approval of a ₦3 billion Cocoa Rejuvenation Project designed to restore the state’s long-standing leadership in cocoa production. The initiative is structured as a public-private partnership and aims to rejuvenate ageing farms, boost yields, and support farmers with improved seedlings and modern practices.

The government’s decision comes at a time when global cocoa supply has faced significant disruptions, leaving a gap that Oyo hopes to help fill. Officials described the moment as a strategic opportunity for the state to reposition itself as a competitive and reliable cocoa-producing hub within Nigeria and beyond.

The project will be jointly managed by the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency and a recognised agricultural research institute. Their partnership is expected to introduce high-yielding cocoa varieties, rehabilitate abandoned farms, and promote sustainable farming methods that increase productivity and enhance bean quality.

Funding for the project will be released in phases over a three-year cycle to ensure accountability, careful monitoring, and steady progress. This phased approach also allows room for mid-project adjustments to strengthen implementation based on real-time feedback from farmers and field experts.

The programme is projected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities, stimulate the rural economy, and improve farmers’ earnings. With better seedlings, modern training, and stronger farm support, smallholder farmers stand to gain significantly as productivity increases and market demand rises.

Beyond farming, the initiative opens the door for the expansion of the cocoa value chain — including processing, packaging, and export. By moving beyond raw-bean production, Oyo State could attract private investors, create agro-processing clusters, and reduce its dependence on traditional revenue streams.

For long-term success, transparency, farmer participation, and continuous capacity-building will be essential. Ensuring equitable distribution of inputs, encouraging farmer cooperatives, and strengthening extension services will determine whether the project delivers on its promises.

Ultimately, the ₦3 billion Cocoa Rejuvenation Project signals a renewed commitment by Oyo State to agricultural transformation. If effectively executed, it could revive cocoa production, boost rural income, and position the state as a major contributor to Nigeria’s agricultural growth in the coming years.
