The decision, according to the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Olusegun Olayiwola, is in response to the growing cases of unruly behaviour, vandalism, and public disorder often associated with the practice.
“Sign out” activities, where final-year students mark their last day in school by writing on uniforms, holding noisy gatherings, and staging processions on the streets, have become a tradition in many parts of Nigeria. However, the government noted that the events have increasingly led to misconduct, accidents, and disruption of public peace.
Olayiwola announced the directive during the 2025/2026 pre-resumption meeting with secondary school principals held at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan. He stressed that the state would strictly enforce the ban as part of its wider efforts to strengthen discipline, ensure safety, and sustain a conducive learning environment.
The commissioner, in a statement signed by his counterpart in the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, also restated the prohibition of mobile phone use among students, warning that phones remain a major source of distraction, cyberbullying, and exposure to inappropriate content.
He further directed principals to recommend only government-approved textbooks, while warning against illegal fees or levies that could deny students access to education. He praised principals for their commitment to academic standards but urged them to maintain punctuality, uphold discipline, and prioritise student safety.
Also speaking at the meeting, the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Olubukola Oladipupo, encouraged principals and teachers to always seek clarification before submitting petitions, adding that her office is open to constructive dialogue that would advance education in the state.
In her address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Bamidele Oyinloye, emphasised the need for diligence and strict compliance with rules in school administration.
Representatives of education bodies, including the state President of ANCOPSS, Mr. Akinoye Christopher, and the state NUT Chairman, Mr. Raji Oladimeji, commended Governor Seyi Makinde for prioritising the welfare of teachers and pledged their support towards a successful and productive academic year.
