Oyo Govt Employs 3,933 Healthcare Workers

Oyo State Governor, 'Seyi Makinde, has officially inducted 3,933 newly recruited primary healthcare workers into the state's civil service. The induction ceremony, held at the Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, marks a significant step in the administration's efforts to revitalize the state's healthcare sector.

Addressing the inductees, Governor Makinde emphasized that the massive recruitment drive was designed to address critical human resource gaps, improve the health worker-to-population ratio, and reduce the workload burden on existing staff. He noted that while the government has invested in renovating and equipping Primary Health Centres (PHCs), such infrastructure improvements would be futile without adequate human capital to deliver services. "It is not the buildings... without the human capital, we are wasting our time," the Governor stated.

Governor Makinde reiterated that healthcare delivery remains a central pillar of his administration, alongside education, economic expansion, and security. He assured the new workers that their welfare would be prioritized to ensure they are motivated to serve effectively at their duty posts, particularly in grassroots communities where 70% of health challenges can be addressed. He also promised to renovate and equip at least one standard secondary healthcare facility in each of the state's geopolitical zones.

The recruitment process was described as merit-based, a point the Governor highlighted to assure the new employees of a rewarding career path. Goodwill messages were delivered by representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), and local government officials, all of whom commended the Governor for the unprecedented recruitment. Dr. Muideen Olatunji, Executive Secretary of the Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, noted that the induction strengthens the "human backbone" of the state's reimagined healthcare architecture.
