Oyo Govt Honours Late Professor Peller with Posthumous Merit Award

In a significant event marking the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, the state government has officially bestowed a posthumous Merit Award upon the late Professor Moshood Abiola Peller, recognizing him as a global icon and a legendary figure in the world of magic. The award presentation took place on Tuesday as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, designed to honor individuals who have played pivotal roles in shaping the history and image of the state over the last five decades.

Governor Seyi Makinde, who presented the award, stated that the honor was a testament to Professor Peller’s "outstanding contributions to the development of Oyo State." The Governor highlighted that Peller's unique career as a master of illusion did not only entertain but also brought international attention to Oyo State, showcasing the diverse and extraordinary talents of its people. He noted that Peller’s legacy remains a source of pride for the state, serving as a reminder of the creative potential that exists within the region.

The prestigious award was received by the late magician's son, Hon. Shina Peller, the Ayedero of Yorubaland and a former member of the House of Representatives. In his acceptance speech, Shina Peller expressed profound gratitude to the state government for the recognition. "Our father was a man of many parts—a legendary magician, a global icon, and a dedicated showman. But above all his titles, the one he held most dear was that of a 'Son of Oyo State,'" he remarked. He emphasized that his father always carried his Oyo heritage with pride, ensuring that his Nigerian roots were recognized on every global stage he performed.

Hon. Shina Peller further noted the significance of the award coming during the state's Golden Jubilee. He described it as a "powerful message" that creative service and cultural ambassadorship are valued by the state. Born in Iseyin, Professor Peller was Africa's most famous magician, dominating the entertainment scene from the 1960s to the 1990s with shows that toured Europe and Africa. This posthumous recognition cements his place not just as an entertainer, but as a pioneer of the creative economy in Western Nigeria.
