Oyo Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Technical, Vocational Education – Acting Governor Lawal

Lawal, who represented Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, made this known on Friday at the combined convocation ceremony of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa, covering the 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 academic sessions.

He explained that the Makinde-led administration is focused on providing holistic education that meets global standards by prioritising both academic and vocational skills, particularly in information and communication technology.

According to him, Oyo State has allocated 20.88 per cent of its current budget to education, surpassing UNESCO’s recommended 20 per cent benchmark, in line with the administration’s resolve to place education at the forefront of its development agenda.

The Acting Governor assured that government would continue to support tertiary institutions with adequate funding, infrastructure development, and policy reforms to enhance accreditation of courses and regularisation of part-time staff.

Charging graduands to uphold strong character, integrity, and creativity alongside their certificates, Lawal emphasised that “true success goes beyond academic qualifications.”

He also pledged that the state would address issues raised by the Polytechnic, including approval of principal officer appointments, infrastructure upgrades, seamless course accreditation, and the regularisation of part-time workers.

Earlier in his address, the Rector of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Dr. Olugbade Akinteye, lauded the Makinde administration for its consistent support, noting that the institution was ranked the third-best polytechnic in Nigeria by JAMB in 2024. He highlighted the successful accreditation of several new Higher National Diploma programmes, including Estate Management, Marketing, Accountancy, Public Administration, and Fashion Design & Clothing Technology.

Some of the graduating students also expressed gratitude to the government and management for providing an enabling environment for their academic growth, while pledging to uphold the Acting Governor’s charge.

The event was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, alumni, and other dignitaries, including the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Segun Olayiwola; the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade; and the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola.
