Oyo Landlord, Accomplice Arrested Over Tenant’s Death in Rent Dispute

Oyo Landlord, Accomplice Arrested Over Tenant’s Death in Rent Dispute

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, when a dispute broke out between the landlord and Olayeni over unpaid rent. The confrontation escalated, and the landlord’s associate allegedly struck the tenant, leading to his collapse. Despite the swift response of emergency personnel, Olayeni was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Adewale Osifeso, issued a statement on Sunday confirming the arrests and assuring the public of a thorough investigation. “The suspects have been arrested, and a detailed investigation is ongoing. The Oyo State Police Command extends its condolences to the victim’s family and is committed to ensuring justice is served,” the statement read.
The incident has sparked renewed public concern over the increasing cost of housing and the growing tension between landlords and tenants nationwide. Many are calling for government action to address the housing crisis and prevent further tragedies.
This is not the first fatal confrontation over rent in Ibadan. In 2011, a similar case saw a landlord arrested for allegedly killing his tenant during a dispute over a N300 electricity bill.
