During a recent exercise in the affected areas, the Honourable Commissioner for Lands addressed the issue of land encroachment, stating, “The lands in question are assets of the Oyo State Government, and we will not tolerate any form of encroachment or illegal occupation.”
He emphasized that those currently working on the land are not legitimate owners or users, but rather “purely land grabbers.” The Commissioner cited the Oyo State Real Property Protection Law, 2017, particularly Section 3, Subsection 1, which stipulates that anyone engaging in land grabbing or related activities could face a prison term of up to 15 years.
Further clarifying the government's position, he noted that notices of revocation had already been sent to occupants in the Podo Area along Top One Garden. A public notification regarding this matter was published in the Tribune Newspaper on September 25, 2012. Additionally, the land was gazetted the same year, confirming its acquisition for a neighborhood market.
Despite the government's efforts, certain occupants took legal action against the Oyo State Government. However, the judgment was ultimately ruled in favor of the State Government.
The Commissioner of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development also expressed the government's willingness to negotiate with landowners who possess genuine Certificates of Occupancy (CofO). He concluded by highlighting the commitment of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, who has stated a clear policy of zero tolerance for land-grabbing activities and is dedicated to ensuring that the state’s assets are utilized for the benefit of all citizens.
