Oyo Police & Culture Ministry Join Forces to Boost Tourism Safety Amid Festive Surge

The Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism have formalised a strategic collaboration aimed at safeguarding tourists and holiday-makers across the state as the festive season approaches. The partnership comes ahead of increased visitor traffic, cultural festivals and entertainment events expected to draw large crowds.

During a courtesy visit, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism and the Commissioner of Police outlined a joint action plan that emphasises heightened patrols, improved intelligence sharing, hot-spot monitoring and coordinated response teams at tourism hubs, event sites and major access routes. The Culture Ministry highlighted that infrastructure improvements alone are insufficient without a strong security architecture to underpin visitor confidence.

Key measures agree­ed include:

• Designation of tourism-security liaison officers stationed at key festivals and major tourist attractions.

• Deployment of mobile police units and rapid-response teams during large gatherings and night-time events.

• A public-awareness campaign to educate visitors and event organisers on safety protocols, emergency contacts and best practices for personal security.

• Strengthened data-sharing between the police and tourism ministry—covering event calendars, crowd projections and potential risks—to ensure proactive rather than reactive policing.

In remarks, the Culture Commissioner stressed that safety is a pre-condition for tourism growth: “We may refurbish attractions, dualise roads and light up our heritage corridor — but without trust in safety, investors and visitors will not come.” The Police Commissioner responded by affirming that no tourist or nightlife venue is outside the state’s radar, and urged businesses, hoteliers and event promoters to partner with law-enforcement units to maintain high standards of security.

The collaboration is seen as timely given the growing competitiveness of tourism in Nigeria’s South-West region. Industry players noted that by synchronising cultural-event planning with law-enforcement readiness, Oyo State is positioning itself as a safer, more attractive destination for domestic and international visitors alike.
