Oyo State Pledges to Host Super Eagles Match at Ibadan — Governor Makinde Speaks

IBADAN, Oyo State — Governor Seyi Makinde has announced that his administration is ready to host a Super Eagles national team match in Ibadan, pledging to provide necessary infrastructure upgrades and support at Lekan Salami Stadium. 

Makinde made this declaration on Saturday while inaugurating the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Ibadan. 
He said, “Let us assess the facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium and see what needs to be improved. I give you my word, we will invest the needed resources.” 

The governor also advocated for a single-term tenure for sports administrators across Nigeria, suggesting it would improve accountability, stability, and performance in sports governance. 

In response, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau thanked Makinde for his commitment and assured that a Super Eagles match would indeed be staged in Oyo State before the current administration’s term ends in 2027.

Gusau added that such matches would help galvanize public interest in football and boost regional pride, noting Oyo’s role in supporting grassroots and domestic league growth. 

The push comes on the heels of Oyo State’s successful hosting of a recent FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match, where the Falconets defeated Rwanda at Lekan Salami Stadium. That match was supported by a state government approval of ₦110 million for logistics, security, and related expenses. 

As the promise takes shape, many will watch whether the upgrades will match the ambition — and whether Ibadan will soon be a destination for national football spectacles.
