The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Oyo State Council has flagged delays in implementing the N80,000 minimum wage for state-owned tertiary institutions, the judiciary, and select government agencies. Speaking during the 2025 Workers’ Day event in Ibadan, NLC Chairman Kayode Martins confirmed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s approval of the N80k wage has not yet reached all workers, including retirees.
Martins emphasized that while Makinde’s decision surpasses the federal government’s N30k benchmark, gaps persist in funding allocations. “Some MDAs, the judiciary, and tertiary institutions lack the budgetary subvention to absorb the N80k wage,” he stated, urging authorities to address the deficit. The NLC also criticized inflationary policies exacerbating workers’ hardship.
Oyo State Trade Union Congress (TUC) Chairman Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro echoed concerns over the federal government’s economic policies, pledging unions would advocate for workers’ rights. Meanwhile, pensioners’ groups lauded Makinde’s pension reviews, positioning Oyo retirees among Nigeria’s highest-paid.
Representing Governor Makinde, Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal reiterated the administration’s commitment to worker welfare, citing prompt salary payments and promotion reforms. However, unions stressed that full implementation of the N80k wage remains pending for critical sectors.
The Workers’ Day event featured marches by public and private organizations and honored exceptional employees.
