Oyo State to Launch AfCFTA Implementation Strategy Friday

Oyo State to Launch AfCFTA Implementation Strategy Friday

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on International Trade and AfCFTA, Ms. Neo Theodore-Tlhaselo, disclosed this at a press briefing on Thursday. She described the launch as a milestone in the state’s economic expansion drive, noting that it positions Oyo as the first sub-national in Africa—out of 591—to adopt the AfCFTA strategy.

According to her, the strategy will help Oyo State align its policies and legislation with the pan-African trade framework, enabling businesses and residents to benefit from reduced tariffs and wider access to the continent’s single market of 54 countries.

The launch, scheduled to take place at the University of Ibadan, will be attended by key stakeholders, including the AfCFTA Secretary General, His Excellency Wamkele Mene, federal officials, and dignitaries from across Africa.

Ms. Tlhaselo emphasized that the implementation strategy goes beyond paperwork, stressing that it represents Oyo State’s commitment to domesticating AfCFTA agreements and accelerating economic growth.

“This is a big milestone, not just because we are the first, but because it demonstrates Governor Makinde’s dedication to expanding Oyo’s economy and improving the livelihoods of its people,” she said.

The press briefing was attended by members of the Oyo State AfCFTA Technical Working Group, including representatives from the Ibadan Chamber of Commerce and OYSIPA.
