The Oyo State Government has announced the formation of a joint task force to address illegal mining and enforce Executive Order 001/2023. The initiative, unveiled on April 24, marks a bold move to curb unauthorized mining and enforce compliance with regulatory frameworks.
The task force, described as a long-term solution to illegal mining, will escalate efforts to punish offenders and safeguard communities. Abiodun Oni, Director-General of Oyo’s Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), emphasized the state’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy. “Illegal mining will no longer be tolerated. Perpetrators will face prosecution, and the law will prevail,” he stated.
Residents were urged to actively report suspicious activities to authorities. “If you notice anything unusual, speak up. Collaboration is key to eradicating this menace,” Oni added.
The task force includes Nigeria’s major security agencies, such as the Amotekun Corps, reflecting Governor Seyi Makinde’s resolve to prioritize citizen safety and resource protection. Olufunke Omidiran, OYSMIDA’s General Manager, highlighted the group’s mandate to promote sustainable mining and environmental stewardship.
To complement operational actions, the state has intensified the enforcement of Executive Order 001/2023. This order mandates mining stakeholders to sign consent letters and community development agreements in line with the Nigerian Mining Act.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Segun Adegoke, affirmed that the task force represents a strategic response to rising threats. “Oyo is confronting this issue head-on to ensure accountability and restore integrity to the sector.”
The move underscores Oyo’s dedication to balancing economic development with environmental conservation and community welfare.
