Oyo Varsity Calms Fears After Fire Incident at Radio Studio

Oyo Varsity Calms Fears After Fire Incident at Radio Studio

The incident, which occurred on Monday, was reportedly triggered by an electrical surge from the air-conditioning system. The fire spread quickly before firefighters arrived to bring it under control.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said firefighters led by PFS 11 Makinde responded swiftly to the call. According to him, although the studio was already engulfed in flames, the team successfully stopped the fire from spreading further.

“No casualty was recorded, and we were able to save property worth millions of naira,” Akinwande noted. He also advised the public to always keep functional fire extinguishers within reach to prevent small fires from escalating.

Speaking on behalf of the university, its Public Relations Officer, Olufemi Atoyebi, confirmed that no lives were lost, adding that contrary to speculation, the damage was minimal.

“The radio station is purely a training station and not for commercial purposes. When the fire started, our fire service unit quickly responded and contained it. All the equipment is intact, only a few wires were affected, and we have already fixed them. We are almost back on air,” Atoyebi explained.

He emphasized that the incident should not cause panic, as the studio is far from residential areas and the school is currently on holiday with no students on campus.

This comes just weeks after a similar fire outbreak was recorded at Fresh FM studio in Ibadan, Oyo State.
